Keratoconus
What is keratoconus?
Keratoconus is a condition where cornea becomes cone shaped and progressively thinner leading to reduced and distorted vision. Most of the thinning occurs during teenage years and tends to stabilize by 30’s.
More severe forms of keratoconus can lead to a break in one of the corneal layers causing a condition called hydrops. The cornea swells and becomes cloudy leading to poor vison and light sensitivity. In most advanced stagescorneal transplant might be necessary.
Keratoconus needs to be monitored as treatment is available to slow down or stop the progression.
An important thing to remember is to avoid excessive eye rubbing as this will accelerate the progression.
