Neuro Ophthalmology
Neuro-ophthalmologists take care of patients who have nervous system problems, or systemic problems that affect the eyes and the visual system.
These patients are usually complex and need a comprehensive eye examination. Your neuro-ophthalmologist might refer you for further testing including MRI and CT scans as well as blood work-up. They may also refer you to see another specialist such as a neurologist or a neurosurgeon.
If you’ve had any relevant scans, please bring the reports with you to your appointment.
Some of the conditions seen by neuro-ophthalmologists include:
- Multiple sclerosis and optic neuritis
- Neuroretinitis and optic nerve neuropathies such as NAION
- Intracranial hypertension with papilloedema.
- Eye movement disorders such cranial nerve dysfunctions that can cause double vision
- Orbital problems such as thyroid eye disease
- Visual field problems such as brain tumours, and post stroke visual field assessments.
- Ocular myasthenia gravis
- Botox treatments for blepharospasm.
Most of the neuro-ophthalmological treatments include addressing the underlying systemic or nervous problem as well treating the visual presentation. This usually involves co-managing your condition with your GP as well as other specialists looking after you. Management includes monitoring, medications and surgery
