Refractive Surgery

We offer several effective procedures to correct shortsightedness, longsightedness and astigmatism.

What is laser eye surgery?

Laser eye surgery involves reshaping the cornea to adjust the focus of the light onto the retina and correct the refractive error.

Laser eye surgery is recommended for patients with refractive error who wish to be independent of their glasses of contact lens. Some patients elect surgery to enable them to participate in certain sports or to meet entry requirements for certain occupations.

The following guidelines for suitability for laser surgery currently prevail:

  • Minimum age of 18 years
  • No significant change in glasses prescription for the last 6 months
  • Most levels of myopia/hyperopia/astigmatism
  • Superficial corneal scars less than 200 microns deep (PTK)

Available at New Vision Clinics, The ELITATM System uses advanced femtosecond technology in two of the three primary laser eye surgery options available today.

  • Lenticule
  • LASIK
  • PRK

Refractive lens exchange

Modern refractive laser surgery is able to correct a wide range of spectacle prescriptions for both shortsightedness and longsightedness. However, there are some patients with high level of refractive error who fall outside the bounds of suitable treatment with laser surgery. In these cases, a refractive lens exchange, RLE, with a replacement implant offers an effective alternative treatment to correct vision.

A natural crystalline lens of the eye is removed through a small incision, and replaced with an implant that is inserted through this same incision requiring minimal recovery time. The procedure is the same as for cataract surgery except that there is no cataract present.
