Dr Kira Michalova

MEDICAL RETINAL SPECIALIST & CATARACT SURGEON

Dr Kira Michalova is an ophthalmologist specialising in the medical treatment of retinal diseases, with a special interest in age–related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy. She’s also an experienced cataract surgeon.

Dr Michalova attained the Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists in 2007. This same year, she started further training in retinal diseases and worked as the Medical Retina Fellow at the Centre for Eye Research Australia and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. Since 2008 she’s been serving the community of Melbourne’s South-East both in public and private appointments.

Dr Michalova also has extensive international experience, having worked in the Czech Republic, the USA, and in New Zealand.  In addition, she’s volunteered in several developing countries in Asia, as an ophthalmologist on Project Orbis, a flying eye hospital.

She is currently the Deputy Head of the Ophthalmology Department at Monash Health. She is a supervisor of ophthalmology registrars, performs and teaches eye surgery in the hospitals in the Monash Health network and is a Consultant Ophthalmologist in the medical retina clinic at the Alfred Hospital.

Not only does Dr Michalova teach ophthalmology registrars, but she also teaches medical students and optometrists. She’s an investigator in international trials on new treatments for AMD and diabetic retinopathy.

Dr Michalova is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Specialists, the Oceania Retinal Association, and represents Victoria on the Council of Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.

When not working, she is an avid golfer, tennis player and loves walking her dog on the beach.
